How the NEET pattern has changed
The optional questions added during the COVID-19 years were removed in 2025, bringing back a fully compulsory paper.
| Years | Questions | Duration | Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 2020 | 180, all compulsory | 3 hours | Pen and paper |
| 2021 to 2024 | 200; answer 180 (choose 10 of 15 in each Section B) | 3 hours 20 minutes | Pen and paper |
| 2025 and 2026 | 180, all compulsory | 3 hours | Pen and paper |
| 2027 | To be confirmed in the bulletin | To be confirmed | Computer-based test announced |
What the pattern means for your preparation
- About one minute per question: timed practice matters as much as knowing the content.
- Biology is half the paper: Botany and Zoology carry 360 of the 720 marks.
- A wrong answer costs a mark: if you can rule out one or two options, attempting usually pays; practise deciding quickly in mock tests.
- No optional section: every chapter can appear, so there are no chapters you can skip by choosing other questions.
- Practise on screen: with a computer-based test announced for 2027, get used to reading and answering questions on a screen.
- Write full-length mock tests in the real pattern, then review every mistake before the next one.

Questions students and parents ask
How many questions are there in NEET 2027?
Based on the latest official pattern, NEET has 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions: 45 each in Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. NTA will confirm the NEET 2027 pattern in its information bulletin.
What is the total mark of NEET?
720 marks. Each of the 180 questions carries 4 marks.
Is NEET 2027 online or offline?
The Centre has announced that NEET-UG will be a computer-based test (CBT) from 2027, after the NEET 2026 paper leak. NEET 2026 was a pen-and-paper (OMR) exam. The number of days and shifts will be in the NEET 2027 information bulletin.
Is there negative marking in NEET?
Yes. A correct answer gets 4 marks, a wrong answer loses 1 mark, and an unanswered question gets 0.
Are there optional questions in NEET now?
No. From 2021 to 2024 each subject had an optional Section B where candidates chose 10 of 15 questions. NTA removed it from 2025, so all 180 questions are compulsory.
How much time do I get per question in NEET?
The exam gives 180 minutes for 180 questions, so about one minute per question on average. Biology questions are often quicker, which leaves more time for calculations in Physics and Chemistry.
